Scarlet Macaws for Sale!
Scarlet Macaws (Ara macao), also known as Red-and-yellow, Red-breasted, or Red-yellow-and-blue Macaws, are colossal birds found only in the Central and South American rain forests.
They frequently fly in groups of two or more. On rare occasions, bigger flocks can be seen feeding in the canopy or at a preferred feeding location.
They have extremely powerful beaks, with a pressure range of 500 to 2,000+ psi (pounds per square inch). The typical bite force of a human is about 150 pounds per square inch. Even the hardest nuts and seeds can be crushed or opened by these powerful birds.
These birds can fly at rates of up to 35 mph (56 km/h).
The loss of their native habitat owing to deforestation, as well as the illicit capture of chicks and adults for the worldwide pet trade, have put these birds on the endangered species list. Besides sport, locals kill them for the meat and the feathers they sell for ornamentation.
HABITAT
This bird’s range extends from southern Mexico to Peruvian Amazonia and the Caribbean island of Trinidad & Tobago. In forests and around rivers, they love to spend their time in huge, noisy groups among tall, deciduous trees. Macaws are monogamous and lay their eggs in the holes of dead canopy trees from January to April. Adults lay up to two eggs every year and spend hours cleaning bugs from their feathers as they preen each other and their children.
DIET
The scarlet macaw’s food is primarily composed of rainforest nuts, leaves, berries, and seeds. Its powerful, hooked beak is ideal for cracking open nuts and seeds. It’s interesting to note that scarlet macaws can eat fruits that are so toxic to other animals that they kill them. This could be because they also consume a lot of clay, which is thought to neutralize plant toxins.
