ORIGIN

Severe Macaws are species of macaws native to Southern America and northern South America.

DESCRIPTION

The severe macaw is one of the largest of the mini macaws. It grows up to 45cenimetres and weighs approximately 400grams. Its wing’s feathers are blue and red. Its skin is white, with dark feathers around its eyes. It has a brown patch on its head.

Temperament

A severe macaw is a charming bird when hand rose. It is a wonderful creation of nature. While still tender, make your pet socialize with as many new people as possible to curb its tendency of becoming a one-person bird.  Always keep it under your watch while it is out of its cage. A well-trained macaw can accompany you by sitting on your shoulder while you do the household chores. Although they are screamers, some of them are actually capable of fluent talking. If not given adequate attention, these macaws can be nippy and destructive. This inquisitive bird can as well ingest some toxic elements

DIETARY PLAN

The best diet for a macaw in captivity begins with a formulated parrot mix that comprises seeds, dried fruits, and nuts. Provide a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables daily, coupled with high calcium greens like kale and spinach. An all-seed diet is extremely unhealthy for these birds. Never offer chocolate and avocado, they are very toxic. The average healthy macaw will consume approximately 10 to 15 percent of its body weight daily. An average bird weighs about 2 pounds. You can expect a bird will eat about 1/2 cup of food per day, which equates to about 100 pounds of food per year. Feed them in the morning upon rising and remember to take out any uneaten fruits and vegetables after every hour.

DIETARY PLAN

Its diet should comprise mainly seeds, vitamins, minerals, nuts, vegetables, and fruits. Optionally, you can add rice, Potatoes, Pasta, and scrap bones, though they are ae not necessarily a natural part of the diet. Nuts used for the Macaws consist of Brazil Nuts for Hyacinths and Pecans for the others. It is essential that you get exceptionally the raw Brazil nut in its shell. This is because cracking open the shell is essential for maintaining its beak.

CAGE

A Macaw needs to require, places for toys, perches for standing and climbing, places for toys, and mounted food, water, and treat dishes. Ensure wherever your macaw is, it is “bird proof”. These birds are capable of chewing everything and anything that comes their way. The minimum cage size required for these species of birds should be 36 inches wide, 48 -inches deep, and 60 inches tall. The height of their cages does not really matter as much. However, having a cramped tail for too long can cause health and balance issues for a large macaw.
