These birds are playful and active with very high intelligence, the Hahn Macaw is easily trainable and amusing, with an outgoing and hilarious personality. Even though they are not known to be the best talkers some individuals are reported to be better talkers. For those that are intimidated by the very large beak of the larger macaw species such as the scarlet, blue and gold, and green-winged macaws, the medium-sized parrots can make great companions. Hahn Macaws crave loving and caring homes where there is much pampering. They can pick up many words and phrases as well as ridiculous laughter. Hahn Macaws can equally have a harsh, loud call, however, they only use it when they are really distressed or trying to get in contact with their flock/family. Though some individuals are reported to be noisy, most will vocalize once or twice a day like most parrots, for this reason, they are a great alternative to the noisy large macaws.
They are usually 34 cm / 13 inches and live up to 50 years and above. Hahn Macaws are predominately deep forest green with dark teal on the top of their heads above their beaks, and crimson red at the bends of their wings on mature birds. They have white patches of skin around their eyes with small black feathers that trace patterns on their white facial skin. Hahn Macaws are endearing and acrobatic. Their favorite position is hanging by one toe while playing with a toy, or from your fingers. Extremely playful and exuberant, like cats, they adore toys and readily accept new ones. They equally seem to love things to snuggle with or to hide in while sleeping. Like other macaws, Hahn Macaws love to be cuddled and “scratched” when they trust the person they are with. Like most Macaws, the Hahn Macaw is playful, talkative and a superb pet. A Hahn Macaw is like a child that needs to be pampered with to give fantastic results. They are not much of screamers unless they are isolated from their flock/family. Hahn Macaws quickly form attachments to their handlers and will amuse them for hours with their boisterous antics!
Hahn macaws eat a high-quality pellet diet. This is in addition to daily servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, which make mealtime interesting to watch. Macaws, depending on their size, will eat about 1/2 to 3/4 cup of parrot mix and about 1/2 to 3/4 cup of fruit and vegetables per day. Provide fresh drinking water every day. These parrots will be delighted with dark greens like kale and spinach as well as broccoli, carrots, squash, and even some chili peppers.
