Moluccan cockatoos are loud, beautiful birds that many people keep as pets. However, before choosing a Moluccan cockatoo for your pet bird, you need to understand what living with one is like. Moluccan cockatoos are high-maintenance pets that are demanding and needy birds. They can live over 30 years, and they are very messy. They require a lot of time, attention, and work to keep as pets.
Size: 40 – 50 cm / 17 – 20 inches
Life Expectancy: 60 – 65 years
The Moluccan Cockatoo has white-pink feathers with a definite peachy glow, a slight yellow on the underwing and underside of the tail feathers, and a large retractable recumbent crest which it raises when threatened, revealing hitherto concealed bright red-orange plumes to frighten potential attackers.
Origin of Moluccan Cockatoo
The Moluccan Cockatoo is endemic to Seram and surrounding islands, which are located in the Indonesian archipelago, also known as the Moluccas or Spice Islands.
The Moluccan Cockatoos are very beautiful, intelligent, lovable, and affectionate birds. However, Moluccans are very aggressive chewers who need a steady supply of toys and perches to destroy. They have extremely destructive beaks.
They have piercing, loud voices, which can carry for long distances. They tend to vocalize at least twice each day and evening. They are not suited to either apartment dwellings or closely spaces houses. Moluccans need roomy cages, exercise, and things to keep them busy and not bored. They are one of the species more prone to feather plucking. They can be taught many tricks, and some are very good talkers. They can be rather loud when they call their flock/family in the early morning and late afternoon.
Ideally, the well-behaved Moluccan is cuddly and whispers sweet nothings in your ears, preens your eyelashes lovingly and tenderly, is devoted to you and only you. However, they may scream incessantly if not given enough attention, mental stimulation, or sleep at their worst. If you live in an apartment, don’t think of keeping a Moluccan cockatoo as a pet. It is too noisy to be kept in an apartment.
