Description

Red-lored Amazon Parrot is ready for your home! The Red-fronted Amazon, also known as the Golden-cheeked Amazon or Scarlet-lored Amazon is an Amazon parrot species native to the Americas’ tropical regions, from eastern Mexico south to Ecuador. Feral populations are known to inhabit various areas of California.

Red-lored Amazon parrots are impressive and charming birds prized for their beauty and intelligence. They need comical personalities among the foremost famous pet parrots. Most have a fantastic talking ability, which adds to their appeal. This species is understood for having a naughty streak if not trained well, so plan on being a disciplinarian with this bird.

The Red-lored Amazon’s plumage is primarily green, with a red forehead and, in some subspecies, yellow cheeks with possible red spots on their cheeks. The crown is typically blue. Adult males and females don’t differ in plumage, so DNA testing is suggested for gender clarity. Juveniles have less yellow on the cheeks, less red on the forehead, and dark irises.

Size: about 13 inches and 0.8 pounds

Lifespan: Can live to 80 or 100 years; most commonly, will live 40 approximately years.

Temperament: Red-lored Amazons are intelligent, charismatic birds that wish to be with their owners and other birds. They bond quickly to human relations. Some tend to select their favorite people and become loyal, one-person birds.

They can be devoted pets, and a few make fairly good talkers. Like most amazon parrots, they often tend to vocalize loudly and sometimes to bite. Their behavior ranges from being quiet and interested in being aggressive. This will all be changed by military training when the bird is young.

These birds are very talented talkers and singers. Amazons, generally, are rather vocal birds that enjoy interacting with you verbally. Potential owners should even be aware that each one Amazons can scream and most frequently do. If you adopt one, expect a 10-minute warning call at sunrise and sunset a day.

Like many parrots, these birds are often aggressive and bite if not properly trained. They’re known for having a naughty streak and should use their beaks to “discipline” their keepers. Protect against them chewing electrical wires (a severe hazard) and other things around the house.

Caring for the Red-Lored Amazon

A cage for a red-lored Amazon should be three-foot square. Of course, bigger is usually better. Ideally, this bird’s minimum cage size would be 36″ long, 24″ wide, and 66″ high with ¾” wire spacing. To stay these birds from getting restless and into trouble, the outing of their cage is essential. Play gyms can provide an oasis for your Amazon, where it is often faraway from its cage and viewed as a secure perch.

Diet: Their food includes fruits, nuts, and seeds. Like all parrots, red-lored amazons need a varied diet consisting of high-quality pellets, a top-quality seed mix, and daily servings of fresh, bird-safe fruits and vegetables. Avoid avocados and eggplant as these are often dangerous and poisonous for these Amazons.

 DNA testing:

Suppose there is no gender option listed for a bird on our website. Therein case, that specific species is ‘monomorphic,’ which suggests we cannot determine gender without purchasing DNA testing. DNA testing may be a further $149 per bird to make sure of the favored gender. Please contact us for the DNA of the bird, so we’ll get your feather Friends ready.
